My New Favorite Magnesium Supplement? Reviewing MagTech By Natural Stacks

I’ve had a lot of great experiences working magnesium into my diet through new foods and supplements. Overall, it’s improved my mood, work capacity, athletic recovery, and sleep (in a big way). So when I heard about Natural Stacks’ MagTech product, I was intrigued. While it’s marketed as a blend of magnesium compounds to improve cognitive ability and memory — more of a brain (or nootropic) supplement than anything else.

Indeed, magnesium has been closely tied to numerous cognitive benefits including memory. But Natural Stacks also claims the inclusion of Magnesium Glycinate in this supplement is beneficial to sleep and restfulness. Read below to see if this magnesium blend stood up to some of my other favorite sleep supplements.

Stated Use

Take 2 [3 capsule] servings per day, preferably 1 serving in the afternoon and 1 serving in the evening, or as directed by a healthcare practitioner.

Magnesium – 200 mg (From 1000 mg Magtein Magnesium L-Threonate, 630 mg Magnesium Taurate, and 525 mg Magnesium Glycinate) — As I discuss in this article, magnesium is an essential nutrient that plays many important roles in the body. However, I discuss it most often on this site for its importance in regulating sleep cycles and its ability to help treat insomnia. Many of my favorite sleep supplements — including Natural Calm, ZMA with Theanine, and New Mood — contain magnesium in some form and amount.

MagTech contains magnesium in three highly absorbable forms, and they’re a bit different than the forms I’ve seen in other sleep supps. If you take the fully recommend dosage per day — three capsules twice per day — you’ll get a full daily recommended serving of magnesium, about on par with ZMA. (It’s worth noting that many, many Americans are deficient in magnesium, and it’s been largely stripped from our diets.) At least one of these forms of magnesium is also tied to improved mood.

Other Ingredients: Vegetable capsule, cellulose, vegetable stearate, silica.

My Experience

I took two servings of MagTech per day, one in the afternoon and one around 30-60 minutes before bed. The first night, I experienced restful, deep sleep not unlike what I’d experience with Natural Calm; it wasn’t the deepest sleep of my life or the most powerful feeling sleep supplement, but the calm and sense of relaxation was potent. In fact, I liked it so much that I kept taking MagTech in this dosage for two straight weeks — and the only thing that stopped me was a new batch of sleep supplements to test, and I wanted to get accurate results without stacking multiple formulations.

MagTech ReviewOverall, the sleep I experienced while on MagTech was similar to what I’d experience with a good ZMA formula, though I had fewer of the off-the-wall dreams I sometimes get with ZMA (though the dreaming was still pretty vivid). MagTech didn’t have me all smiles throughout the day, and I definitely felt a bigger improvement in my sleep than my mood. But my mood did improve from day to day, if only slightly.

I didn’t notice anything particularly different about my memory recall or thinking, though I will say better sleep generally gets me performing better in the workplace and beyond. If anything, the brain-friendly magnesium compounds in MagTech definitely didn’t hurt my cognitive abilities, and it’d be interesting to see what long-term use could do for overall brain health and function.

Pros:

  • Multiple forms of magnesium compounds include a variety of benefits
  • Highly absorbable forms of magnesium that can better cross the blood/brain barrier
  • Promoted restful sleep and a sense of calm
  • I experienced fewer “strange” dreams as compared to ZMA
  • Could be good for regular usage (it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor before beginning a new supplement routine)<
  • Effective even if I had fewer than 8 hours to sleep<

Cons:

  • The full recommended dosage (6 capsules) can seem like a lot
  • Not the deepest sleep I’ve experienced from supplementation
  • Doesn’t act quite as fast or calm me quite as much as Natural Calm

The Final Word

I wasn’t expecting to like MagTech as much as I did. It definitely helped me sleep better, and I may even prefer it to ZMA with Theanine — though I want to test it more around periods when I’m exercising frequently to see if it helps boost athletic recovery as ZMA sometimes does. Taking six pills per day seems like a lot, but I’ve also felt significant benefits from half that dosage.

If you’re looking for a convenient, hassle-free way to get more magnesium for sleep and other benefits, MagTech is one of the best supplements I’ve tried to date.
